Buffaloes Defeat Hull Wyke

On an overcast, cold afternoon the Buffaloes played host to the unbeaten Hull Wyke side, who last week had beat the previously undefeated Hunslet Club Parkside.

The Hull team were a big fierce-looking group who, it seemed were used to getting their way on the pitch and tried that from the off. However, the 2017 Buffaloes are made of sterner stuff and held their own.

The Buffaloes started brightly in the first minute when Buffaloes Man of the Match Nathan Hammond went on a rampaging run, which set the tone for Hammonds involvement in the game.

in the 10th minute, following a Hull Wyke knock-on, Aaron Henry picked the ball up from the resulting scrum and slipped the ball to Hammond, who raced away from the defence to open the scoring, with an unconverted try, giving the Buffaloes the lead 4-0.

The next 20 minutes was punctuated by the referee’s constant whistle blowing and the Hull Wyke team trying to niggle the Buffaloes in the tackle. There was a pause in plain the 19th minute, when Buffaloes Winger Joe Mathers suffered a nasty looking Knee injury, which resulted in an ambulance being called, which luckily wasn’t needed.

On the half hour mark, Hammond got the ball on his 20-metre line and broke the defensive line, sprinting away from the chasing Wyke players to score his second try of the game, with Henry adding the conversion, increasing the lead to 10-0.

Six minutes later, Tom Langton finished off a sweeping move scoring next to the posts, with Henry again converting the try, extending the lead to 16-0.

On the stroke of half-time Hull, Wyke opened their account when Ben Crane took advantage of some weak defence to crash over for an unconverted try. Making the half time score 16-4.

The second half started in the same vein as the first half with there being lots of niggle in the tackles, lots of high tackles and interference at the play the ball.

In the 55th Minute, Henry followed through after the Wyke fullback dropped a high bomb, kicking the ball on and scoring under the posts where he fell on the ball, converting his try taking the lead to 22-4.

Eleven minutes later and Hammond crashed over for this third try of the day. As he scored the try The Wyke scrum half Conner Dickinson, came in late and punched Hammond several times, and all hell broke loose as all the players came in throwing handbags around. After the commotion, the referee dispatched four players, two from each side, to the sin bin, and Henry converted the try, making the score 28-4.

in the 71st minute, the Wyke Substitute and the man of the match Owen Jones-Barker broke through the reduced defence to score a try, which full back Alec Hardie Converted making the score 28-10.

With five minutes left on the clock winger, Rob Brown broke free of the desperate defence to conclude the scoring with an unconverted try making the final score 32-10.
