Hunslet Beat the Buffaloes

In the first ever clash between the two clubs, who over the years have helped each other out and there are lots of players who have played for both clubs, Hunslet Club Parkside beat the Buffaloes 34-10, which flattered the home team as the game was much closer than the scoreline suggests.

The game was bathed in glorious sunshine on the first hot day of the year. From the off the Buffaloes allowed the Kickoff to bounce and the Hunslet Club were on the attack and in the third minutes Hunslet Club centre Daune Goodyear, strolled through some weak defence for the opening score, with Full Back Luke Medley adding the conversion, giving the Hunslet club the lead 6-0.

In the 15th Minute following a string of penalties the Hunslet Club were in again when Winger Jake Corney stormed over, Medley again adding the extras, doubling the lead to 12-0.

Straight from the restart, the Hunslet Club were over again when Medley, sprinted 70 metres to score unopposed under the posts, converting his try, making the score 18-0.

In the 23rd minute the Buffaloes were on the attack for the first time in the game and Winger Rob Brown, on debut, bustled his way through the defence to score an unconverted try.

On the stroke of half-time, the returning Nathan Hammond playing his first game for the club since the grand final of 2014, barged over for a try with Connor McGill adding the conversion, making the half time score 18-10.

In the 48th Minute the Hunslet Club, opened their second half account when loose forward Carl Briggs crashed over for an unconverted try, making the score 22-10.

On the three-quarter mark, another returning player, Anthony Mills, again playing his first game for the club since the 2014 season, came on to the field and attracted the attention of four defenders. Hunslet Clubs Lee Kelly decided to come into the tackle all guns blazing and fists swinging and ended up on in the sinbin.

In the 63rd Minute the Buffaloes started their resurgence, the Hunslet Club were tiring in the heat, and the away team sensed the game was there for the taking. They broke down the left-hand side of the field with the best passing move of the match, and as Brad Wilson was touching the ball down for a try, the referee called the play back for an offence, but his signal was unclear, and the players and fans were left mystified.

Three minutes later the Buffaloes thought they were in again only for the referee to call them back for a forward pass which at best was flat.

In the 71st minute, the game turned again in favour of the home team when the Buffaloes Smith was sent to the sin-bin for an alleged high tackle.

In the 73rd minute, Hunslet Club was awarded another dubious penalty, this time for alleged holding down in the tackle, when in reality the Hunslet Club player, as he was standing up threw himself in the air with no one around him, like a premiership footballer. The referee only saw the end of the dive and awarded the penalty.

Two minutes later Goodyear intercepted a loose pass and raced away from the Buffaloes players to score a try under the post with Medley adding the Conversion, making the score 28-10.

In the 79th minute, Jake Southern scored the final try of the afternoon, following a scrappy tackle where the referee appeared to miss a knock on, with Medley adding the conversion. Making the final score 34-10.

A much-improved performance from the first game and things will only get better as the season progresses. Steve Langton was happier with the performance and is looking forward to the next game in a fortnight.
